Q1: What are carbide grippers?
A: Industrially known as cemented carbide slip inserts, carbide grippers are sintered tungsten carbide-cobalt components (tungsten carbide matrix bonded with cobalt binder). Their surfaces are precision-machined with anti-slip serrated teeth, and most variants are silver-brazed onto a 45# or 40Cr steel substrate. Relying on their ultra-hard, wear-resistant tooth profiles, they clamp drill pipes, casings, metal bars and shaft workpieces. They are divided into three core application types: slips for oilfield wellheads, chuck jaws for CNC lathes, and gripping inserts for automation robotic grippers.
Q2: How to select carbide grippers grade and their applications?
A: For YG-series carbide: higher cobalt means better toughness and impact resistance; lower cobalt means higher hardness and better wear resistance.
YG6: Low cobalt, HRA 90–91, high wear resistance. Suitable for light-load, impact-free smooth clamping pads; not for toothed load-bearing slips.
YG8: General-purpose balanced grade. Ideal for standard oilfield drill pipe slips and common steel pipe clamping. It is the most widely used grade.
YG8C / YG11C: Coarse grain, high toughness. For heavy-duty drilling, burr workpieces and frequent impact clamping, anti-chipping performance is excellent.
YG13C / YG15: High cobalt, maximum impact resistance. Used for large drill collars, downhole packer anchors and heavy mining clamps to prevent tooth breakage under severe impacts.
