Recommended common grades for different processing metal materials:
1. For machining ordinary carbon steel and alloy steel:
Preferred choice: CVD-coated inserts (such as those with Al₂O₃-based coatings) typically correspond to the P-class (blue label).
If the operating conditions require higher toughness (e.g., for interrupted cutting), PVD-coated inserts (such as TiAlN) may be selected.
2. Processing of stainless steel and austenitic steel:
Preferred choice: PVD-coated inserts, particularly those with TiAlN or AlTiN coatings. These coatings effectively inhibit built-up edge (BUE) formation and maintain a sharp cutting edge.
Grade classification: M-class (yellow label).
3. Machining cast iron:
Preferred choice: CVD thick coatings (such as TiCN-Al₂O₃), which offer good wear resistance and compressive strength. The grade designation usually starts with K (red label).
4. High-speed machining, high-hardness materials (hardened steel):
For finishing and continuous cutting: PVD coatings (such as AlTiN or TiSiN) are recommended; these coatings are thin and provide sharp cutting edges, while the surface compressive stress helps resist edge chipping.
For heavy-duty roughing: CVD composite coatings (Al₂O₃ + TiCN) may be selected to leverage their heat and wear resistance.
